An officer who was facing charges for allegedly shooting at two teenagers in 2020 has had the charges against him dropped. This comes after the charge was re-filed, following a mistrial earlier this year.
The initial case resulted in a mistrial earlier this year because the district attorney's office failed to disclose critical information to Cruz's attorneys. That was the same reason the unit's other cases against two other former San Antonio police officers resulted in mistrials late last year.Though court records show Cruz's case was dismissed last Friday because prosecutors couldn't prove the case.
Cruz was originally charged with deadly conduct in connection with an incident that happened in March of 2020.But the division has yet to convict a single officer they've charged.Cruz's dismissal came days after the district attorney's office announced that Jeff Mulliner would be taking over as the director of the civil rights division.Former district attorney Nico LaHood's firm represented all three officers, Cruz included, who have had their cases result in mistrials.
"This sidelines people's lives,” said Attorney Nico LaHood.“ Mr. Cruz has been on the sideline, Mr. Cruz has been through a trial, a jury trial, losing money and jobs, not to mention the public ridicule of this. This is not some political posturing that should be done"
