The league handed James, a three-time Pro Bowler, a one-game suspension following his hit on Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Pat Freiermuth.
INGLEWOOD, CALIFORNIA - AUGUST 20: Derwin James Jr. #3 of the Los Angeles Chargers looks on prior to the preseason game against the New Orleans Saints at SoFi Stadium on August 20, 2023 in Inglewood, California.
The league handed James, a three-time Pro Bowler, a one-game suspension following his hit on Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Pat Freiermuth last Sunday. James tackled Freiermuth by lowering his head, causing the players’ helmets to collide. NFL Vice President of Football Operations Jon Runyan later wrote to James, accusing him of "repeated violations of playing rules intended to protect the health and safety of players.”
League officials voted to uphold the suspension after James reportedly appealed it, according to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter.
