The Los Angeles Chargers are hoping to carry their recent momentum into a crucial game against the New England Patriots. A win could clinch an AFC wild-card berth for the Chargers, who are currently 9-6 and second in the AFC West.

Chargers wide receiver Derius Davis catches a pass for a touchdown during the fourth quarter against the Denver Broncos on Dec. 19, 2024, at SoFi Stadium. Maybe it’s a confidence thing. Or a momentum thing. It might be both.

“I think it is a huge momentum boost, being able to win a game like that, a tough game like that, against a very good opponent,” Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert said. “To be able to build off that, to see some good things offensively and defensively, I think the signs are good there.” Meaningful games have been few and far between for the Chargers in December and January over the years. They did storm into the playoffs two years ago with victories in four of their final five games, securing an AFC wild-card berth with some dominating play over lackluster opponents.

According to Harbaugh, Herbert stood on the sideline before the game against Denver and eased the pregame tension by comparing it to the free-and-easy feeling he got before playing in a pickup basketball game. There was pressure, to be sure, but it was nothing the Chargers couldn’t overcome.
