On the subsequent drive, kicker Cameron Dicker added a 27-yard field goal to extend the lead to 10-0. Following the field goal, Patriots quarterback Drake Maye fumbled a pitch, which was recovered by safety Derwin James Jr., giving the Chargers favorable field position. Herbert capitalized on the opportunity, finding rookie wide receiver Ladd McConkey for a six-yard touchdown to make it 17-0. Maye left the field briefly in the first quarter for a concussion check after a helmet-to-helmet hit from Chargers defensive back Cam Hart. Maye fumbled the ball after the hit but the Patriots recovered. He was evaluated in the medical tent and then cleared to return. The Patriots' only touchdown came when Maye capitalized on a Chargers offside penalty, throwing a 36-yard pass to wide receiver Demario Douglas.
