ChargePoint, a leading electric vehicle (EV) charging network provider, has rolled out innovative anti-vandalism measures to combat the rising trend of cable theft targeting EV charging stations. The company announced the development of a new cut-resistant charging cable designed to deter thieves. This cable incorporates advanced materials that significantly increase the difficulty for would-be vandals to sever the connection.
ChargePoint emphasized that the cable remains flexible and easy for drivers to use. In addition to the new cable, ChargePoint introduced the ChargePoint Protect alarm system. This sophisticated system is designed to detect tampering with charging cables and trigger an immediate audible and visual alarm using the station's existing speakers, screens and lighting system. Essentially, it functions as a car alarm for charging stations, alerting both drivers and station owners to potential theft attempts. Furthermore, the ChargePoint Protect system can send real-time notifications to station owners via SMS and email, enabling them to swiftly respond to incidents and contact law enforcement. ChargePoint plans to make the cut-resistant cable available on all its commercial and fleet charging stations, and they also intend to license its design to other charging station manufacturers. This move has the potential to significantly reduce cable theft across the industry, enhancing the security and reliability of EV charging infrastructure for all. The licensing deals are anticipated to commence around mid-year, and ChargePoint believes that adopting its cut-resistant cable design will make any charging station more resistant to tampering and more dependable for EV drivers.
