Channel 4 has obviously put a great deal of thought into its general election line-up
More than two years after leaving ‘Newsnight’ to launch ‘The News Agents’ podcast, Emily Maitlis returns to TV to guide viewers through what promises to be a dramatic night, presenting the election results alongside Channel 4 News host Krishnan Guru-Murthy favourites” will attempt to broaden the appeal.
Voters have never been very interested in “politics” when packaged as a discrete subject: it is seen as boring, insular, removed and increasingly formulaic. While it is true there has never been a golden age, the data from opinion polls tell a crushing story of our current malaise: politicians are the least trusted profession in the country, with not even one in 10 of us prepared to believe what they say.
This is coming sharply into focus with the approach of a general election. By law, the poll can be held no later than 28 January, 2025, but it is unlikely to be that late; my own view is that it will probably come in late October or early November, though events might persuade the Prime Minister to go to the country earlier. Channel 4 should seek to do things differently. There is no point in replicating the BBC and Sky News, and Channel 4 News is produced by ITN, so can hardly duplicate itself. But the line-up it has announced is deep into the hazy territory between freshness and gimmickry. Balding is fluent and likeable, but she is someone you want to hear narrating a book on politics rather than writing it.element is neither fish nor fowl.
The ingredients Channel 4 has assembled may produce a watchable and entertaining guide to a long election night. But I am sceptical. Of course it promises some good elements but it also runs the risk of turning a general election into souped-up reality television that helps no one.
