Austin is changing how it picks up bulky trash and brush. Starting in January, Austin Resource Recovery (ARR) is switching to on-demand service so customers can

Starting in January, Austin Resource Recovery is switching to on-demand service so customers can decide when brush, hazardous waste and bulky trash like furniture should be set at the curb for pick up. The change means no more brightly colored postcards will be notifying Austin customers when city trucks will be rolling through their neighborhoods.

Some Austin residents have tires stacked up in their garages for months, waiting for their neighborhood’s twice-a-year bulky collection. But starting in January, long waits should no longer happen. Bestgen says collections will move from a predetermined, twice-a-year schedule to an on-demand service. Each Austin address will be able to schedule up to three collections each year for bulky trash, hazardous waste, and brush.

“It’s just more convenient. Not everyone has access to come down to South Austin to recycle things at the drop-off center,” said Bestgen. “A lot of people are probably throwing these materials in their trash cart to get them out of their garages.”
