Moto GP: Championship leader Jorge Martin crashed out in his home GP in Spain, while Bagnaia took out a dramatic win.
Martin crashes in dramatic Spanish GP! | 01:29 Francesco Bagnaia could hardly believe his luck. From a lowly seventh on the grid, he’d danced on the edge of extreme risk to propel his Ducati into the fight at the front in Sunday’s Spanish Grand Prix, only to inherit the lead when MotoGP championship leader Jorge Martin crashed out ahead of him on lap 11 of 25.Three laps later, Marc Marquez passed Marco Bezzecchi for second place in another Ducati spot swap .
Bagnaia versus Marquez was the talking point from the fourth round of the season in front of the biggest event crowd Jerez has ever seen – 296,741 fans poured into the circuit across three days. “As soon as he makes the second attempt on corner nine, I just try to push again from that moment a lot,” Bagnaia said.Bagnaia got his elbows out against Marquez, then uncorked a lap of mesmerising pace to escape. For a rider who has won 59 premier-class Grands Prix and six titles, Marquez isn’t a man accustomed to having his nose bloodied in a stoush, nor be satisfied with second place.
Asked in the post-event press conference whether respect or rivalry was more important in his fight with Marquez, Bagnaia was unequivocal. And then came Sunday’s race, where Miller fought through to eighth on lap three before dropping back to 11th, where he was taken out by Ducati’s Franco Morbidelli at Turn 5. Miller was initially enraged – he confronted Morbidelli in the trackside gravel trap before marshals got between them – and then baffled by the Italian’s words after his actions, which the stewards deemed to be a racing incident and not worthy of penalty.
“I don’t know if I’ve run over a black cat or walked under a ladder … but we’re just struggling to get luck turning our way,” he said.
