Jim Chalmers has rebuffed Greens demands for an expansion of the taxpayer-funded paid parental leave scheme.

Greens senator Larissa Waters wants an expansion of paid parental leave to include superannuation payments. She cited industry estimates that it would cost just $200 million a year to increase paid parental leave , while the super tax increase is expected to reap $2.3 billion a year from 2027-28 when it is fully in force.“Here we go again, the Greens are siding with the Coalition once more, this time on super,” he said.

“We’ve already made it clear for some time that we intend to act on the super guarantee on PPL when budget circumstances permit – that remains the case and we’ve said so publicly and repeatedly.” While Labor’s national platform includes a commitment to paying superannuation on PPL payments, it has yet to set a timetable. Dr Chalmers said Labor has already extended PPL since coming to government to 26 weeks for new mums and dads.

The Greens superannuation demands come after it rejected the government’s attempt to create the Housing Affordability Future Fund. If the minor party persists when the housing legislation is considered again in October, that will give Prime Minister Anthony Albanese a double dissolution trigger. Asked whether the Greens would block the super tax increase if the government did not accept the PPL expansion, Senator Waters said: “We are seriously considering doing exactly that”.and the government keeps saying they are committed to it and keep delaying it and it’s not good enough,” she said.writes on politics, foreign affairs, defence and security from the Canberra press gallery.
