Chairwoman SupNoraVargas previews Tuesday's vote on the Tijuana Sewage State of Emergency
SAN DIEGO – For decades, contamination and pollution stemming from the Tijuana River and the failing infrastructure from wastewater plants across the border have been devastating the 70 miles of coastline and beaches in San Diego County.
The U.S. International Boundary and Water Commission has documented over 100 billion gallons of toxic effluent entering the United States through the Tijuana River since 2018, and an additional 35 billion gallons crossing the international border since December 28, 2022. San Diego County communities continue to be severely impacted by the health, economic, and environmental repercussions of the transboundary sewage flows.
Chairwoman Nora Vargas and Supervisor Terra Lawson-Remer say the region cannot afford to wait for these projects to be implemented any longer while the binational community suffers. Chairwoman Vargas and Vice Chair Lawson-Remer have requested the Board of Supervisors proclaim a State of Emergency over the Tijuana Sewage crisis, in order to get enough funding to fix the problem for good.
