Matt Carlino joins local powerhouse from TCU, where he served as a graduate assistant
Chad Bickley is stepping down after 17 highly successful seasons as boys basketball coach at Santa Fe Christian High.
The administration at SFC wasted no time in naming a replacement, reaching into the college ranks for former BYU and Marquette star guard Matt Carlino, who spent the last two seasons as a graduate assistant at TCU. The executive pastor at Skyline Church in La Mesa, Bickley, 46, leaves with a 306-199 record at Santa Fe Christian. He is one of 20 boys basketball coaches all-time in San Diego to win at least 300 games. His Eagles won three CIF San Diego Section Division I championships and were the Southern California Division I champions in the COVID-19 season of 2021.In a 20-year career that included three seasons at Hesperia High School, Bickley has 344 victories.
This is the first head coaching job at any level for Carlino, 31, who scored 1,620 points in college, then played professionally in the G League for River Grande Valley and in France for Roanne.
