CFMEU Victoria State Secretary John Sekta says he was “taken aback” by multimillionaire property developer Tim Gurner’s comments on unemployment and productivity. Mr Gurner made his comments at a property summit, calling for a 50 per cent increase in unemployment to encourage Australians to work harder, targeting tradies and younger workers. “Jobs are all union jobs – I mean I don’t know whether he was taken out of context,” Mr Sekta told Sky News Australia. “I haven’t watched the interview – my understanding is he’s apologised for it. “If he really means what he said I think it’s a bit alarming, I think we’ve gone a long way in the construction industry, them against us mentality is really almost non-existent.”

Victoria’s housing statement to give greater power to state’s planning ministerVictoria has confirmed a new tax on short-stay rental properties like Airbnb as part of a housing policy overhaul which includes rental controls and a crackdown on underquoting. Buildings will be knocked down, then rebuilt and redeveloped while adding ten per cent more homes into the market when it comes to a social housing perspective. The housing statement released today includes a new building monitor while providing greater powers for the Victorian Planning Minister Sonya Kilkenny to expedite projects across the state – taking powers away from councils as well as the tribunal in the state. The housing statement also will give more rights for renters although it will not create any no rent caps or freezes. The NSW Treasurer said the Minns’ government was the “first government since 2020/2021” to “not spend every single dollar” pouring into the state’s treasury. “What we are doing is putting away some of that money for a rainy day – to help us rebuild the public’s finances,” Mr Mookhey said. “I am the first treasurer in a couple of years to present a budget in which our expenses aren’t growing as fast as our revenue.”

Andrews government’s ‘mismanagement’ worsening state’s cost of living crisisVictoria Opposition Leader John Pesutto says the cost-of-living crisis in Victoria is worse than any other state because of the mismanagement done by the Andrews Labor government.
