There’s a deeply refreshing quality to that smooth Iberian lilt, a blazered oasis in a vast desert of inanity and buffoonery.
The former camp houses the likes of Ferdinand, Richards, Peter Crouch, Robbie Savage, Jamie Redknapp and Chris Sutton, those who exist to make noise for noise’s sake. The “sound” pundits have never heard a joke which hasn’t split their sides and communicate largely in social media-friendly soundbites, often confirming the idea that those who have nothing to say speak the loudest.
There is also a promising next generation pushing through. Andros Townsend’s stint on co-comms for Hungary vs Switzerland was impressive, but really all he had done was proper research. Theo Walcott and Daniel Sturridge add value whenever they feature. Even those still pushing for managerial careers like Frank Lampard and Wayne Rooney offer something worth listening to when given the opportunity.
