ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - January is Cervical Health Awareness Month, a time when medical professionals encourage women to be proactive in screening for cervical cancer . Alaska Breast and Cervical Screening Assistance Program Outreach Manager Caleb Duplessis said although cervical cancer isn't as prevalent as breast cancer, it often has a higher mortality rate . 'Cancer is deadly,' Duplessis explained. 'Regular screening is one of the most, if not the most effective ways to prevent mortality.
'\'It's not something that is immediately all around you. You can't quite physically see it,' Duplessis explains. 'The potential danger that it can pose is still very very real.'\'It is really easy to put these things off,' Duplessis says. 'By the time that symptoms do arise, you're later in the process, and that means that it's more difficult to treat and you have a less likelihood of surviving that experience.
