Mangione, a University of Pennsylvania graduate, had materials expressing hostility toward corporate America, according to officials.

Officials said Mangione was arrested on firearm charges in Altoona, a Pennsylvania city approximately 230 miles from the site of the attack.Mangione earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in engineering from the University of Pennsylvania in 2020, according to a university spokesperson. While at Penn, he also studied computer science, mathematics and information science.

Before college, Mangione reportedly attended the Gilman School, an all-boys private school in Baltimore, Maryland, where he graduated as valedictorian in 2016, according to several reports at the time. A former classmate toldThe University of Pennsylvania declined to share further details, and Gilman School officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Police have confirmed that investigators recovered shell casings at the crime scene engraved with the words “Deny,” “Defend” and “Depose.” The phrases may reference a book critical of insurance companies, "Delay, Deny, Defend: Why Insurance Companies Don't Pay Claim and What You Can DoAbout It" by Jay M. Feinman.
