This century-old images gives a glimpse into how life was in an area of Watford that is perhaps best now known as the name of one of the stands at Vicarage Road Stadium.
is delighted to share pictures from the archive at Watford Museum and this week we recall the Rookery. The museum’s volunteer archivist Christine Orchard said: “This photo shows the old houses of the Rookery in the early 1900s. “The very earliest cottages in this area were likely built for workers at the silk mill although I am not certain if they are the ones in the photo.“The mill was just off what was known as Rookery Road - today named Riverside Road.
“Silk throwing in the area gave way to a steam laundry in the 1880s which in turn became a piano manufacturer around 1906.”We want our comments to be a lively and valuable part of our community - a place where readers can debate and engage with the most important local issues.
