CEBU CITY — Central Visayas stands to lose 14 percent of its economy equivalent to about P179 billion, due to the separation of Negros Oriental and Siquijor from the region.
This change comes after the passage of the law establishing the Negros Island Region .Felixberto Sato Jr., supervising statistical specialist of the Philippine Statistics Authority Central Visayas , said on Thursday that Negros Oriental contributes 12.9 percent and Siquijor 0.9 percent to the total economy of the region.Despite this reduction, Sato reassured that Central Visayas will maintain its status as a 'trillionaire' economy.
Additionally, Bohol contributes 13.3 percent of the GRDP. Within the three highly urbanized cities in the region, Cebu City contributes 22.4 percent, Lapu-Lapu City contributes 11.8 percent, and Mandaue City contributes 8.5 percent.Meanwhile, unlike Central Visayas, Western Visayas, which reached trillionaire status for the first time in 2023 as announced earlier this year, might experience a major hit to its total regional economy.
