Central Texas school districts approve teacher raises amid budget deficits, citing need to retain staff despite lack of state funding.
File image of Lockhart High School. Several Central Texas school districts , including Lockhart ISD, have approved teacher pay raises for the upcoming school year despite facing budget deficits and inadequate state funding.
Harris says approving teacher and staff pay raises is a matter of prioritizing both employees’ and students’ needs. “Pay is an important factor for recruiting and retaining the best teachers that we can have at the classroom for our students,” he said. Many districts are facing budget deficit crises and are still approving teacher pay raises. Like Leander ISD, who passed a 2.5% raise while looking to maintain a 3% deficit threshold.
Harris says Del Valle is balancing teacher pay raises and its budget through what it calls a “comprehensive budget,” which is expected to be approved at a budget meeting next month. “Over the past couple of weeks, we’ve had multiple meetings with the board and central administration presenting different options to the board,” Harris said.
All of this despite a lack of support coming from the state legislature, the superintendent says. “What we see is that while every district is different, we’re all the same when it comes to the inadequate funding that we receive from the state of Texas,” the Lockhart ISD superintendent said.
