However, he tragically lost his life in May 2023 after being hit in the head with a piece of wood while deconstructing makeshift dugouts at 7th and Radnor’s baseball field.
According to Stern, the team will wear the number 25 on their hats throughout the season for Mercado-Ocasio, as well as keep a number 25 jersey in the dugout.Alex Lilja was in attendance for the Knights first home game. He was a senior on the team last year when Mercado-Ocasio was a freshman.“One of the first ones to show up to the ballpark, last ones to leave. And on top of that, it was just a real blessing to be able to play with him for sure,” Lilja said.
“It’s been kind of rough. You can see it on some kids faces when his name is mentioned, but nobody really says anything a lot, but you can tell by body language and stuff like that,” Stern said.
