FILE - A one-month dosage of hormonal birth control pills is displayed in Sacramento, Calif., Aug. 26, 2016. is sponsored by the state House Minority Leader, Rep. Anthony Daniels, D-Huntsville. An amended version of HB 279 was given favorable approval by the House Judiciary Committee.
To be clear, this bill would do one simple thing: it guarantees the right to contraception. It does not address abortion or IVF treatments. According to recent polls, well over two-thirds of Alabamians, on both sides of the aisle, support the right to contraception. Along with recognizing the right to use contraceptives and for doctors to provide them, the bill states the right to contraceptives may not be infringed on by any law, rule, or policy that limits, delays, or impedes access to contraceptives or information about contraceptives.
