Students at a Tuesday evening memorial service said Justin Johnson, who would have been 17 on Tuesday, never seemed to let the bullying bother him.
The 16-year-old had the opportunity to take the first step by playing on his high school football team at Central Dauphin this fall, according to his friends.
“He ran all the way to Africa!” one of the teens shouted according to video recorded on a doorbell camera.. But Ethan Kough, a classmate, said the boys who drove to his home in several vehicles that night, weren’t real friends. Kough said he believes the boys who went to Johnson’s house Friday — the ones Johnson told his father he was going to play with — were actually making fun of him, and the incident got out of hand.Ninety minutes after the boys first arrived at Johnson’s house, Johnson’s father — discovered his son unconscious in the kitchen.Physical and psychological stress can trigger sickle cell attacks that can be fatal, according to medical studies.
Other students, such as Abigail Gibb, expressed feeling left in the dark about the details of what really went on Friday night. Kough said the teens who went to Johnson’s home Friday belonged to the district’s football program. The school district issued a statement Monday saying social media reports indicated “Justin was subjected to racial insensitivity from classmates,” but it did not mention the athletic department.“They have their share of Black students, but then there are students there who are openly racist,” Kough said.
