The district is the only public school system in Dauphin County without full-day kindergarten.

At a special meeting held Wednesday, the school board and Superintendent Eric Turman presented an outline that includes purchasing three buildings, relocating the district’s administration building and creating four kindergarten centers. File photo by Dan Gleiter | [email protected] school board and Superintendent Eric Turman presented an outline that includes purchasing three buildings, relocating the district’s administration building and creating four kindergarten centers.

The district wants to acquire three buildings for about $9.4 million. Buying and retrofitting existing buildings, Turman added is cheaper than the estimated $45 million it costs to construct a single building. Kindergarten students in 10 of the district’s elementary schools would relocate into kindergarten centers at the following locations:

Thirteen classrooms at the district’s administration building at 600 Rutherford Road in Lower Paxton Township for kindergarten students at E.H. Phillips, Paxtang and Southside elementary schools. Under the plan, the administration building would relocate to the Houcks Road building and incorporate a new district resource center offering services for students and their families.

He estimates costs associated with getting the classrooms up and running is between $550,000 and $800,000. The district would need to hire 21 additional teachers at a cost of about $2.5 million, Turman said.
