CenterPoint: City equipment led to power outage that prompted Houston's boil water notice

A boil water notice was issued for the entire city of Houston on Sunday.The power outage at Houston's East Water Purification Plant that triggered a drop in water pressure leading to the citywide boil-water notice late Sunday night was caused by the city's equipment, according to CenterPoint Energy.
CenterPoint, which delivers power and natural gas to the Houston region, said in an email Monday morning that after officials assessed the company's facilities in the Galena Park and Jacinto City areas, they determined the power issue was"caused by the City's equipment and not related to CenterPoint Energy's system."
Engage Houston, a public information site sponsored by Houston's Public Works Department, showed the plant was undergoing a $23.1 million improvement project that began in June. The project"upgrades and optimizes the East Water Plant, and increases the capacity and reliability to meet immediate and future needs of the City and its customers."
Records also show the city has spent tens of millions of dollars on capital improvement dollars on the plant during the past five years, and plans to spend $448.5 million from 2023 through 2027. The plant is one of three owned by the city of Houston and treats surface water collected from the Trinity River. It's among the largest surface water treatment plants in the state, according to a 2020 segment posted by city-owned HTV.
