The U.S. Census Bureau is revising how it collects race and ethnicity data to better reflect the diverse identities of Americans.

As the U.S. Census Bureau gathers public feedback on how to categorize people into new race and ethnicity groups, the agency has released new research reflecting how U.S. residents from different backgrounds view their racial and ethnic identities. Earlier this year, the U.S. government updated how it categorizes people by race and ethnicity to more accurately count residents who identify as Hispanic and of Middle Eastern and North African heritage.

This marks the first change in these categories in 27 years. Under the revisions, questions about race and ethnicity that were previously asked separately on forms will be combined into a single question. This allows respondents to select multiple categories simultaneously, such as ‘Black,’ ‘American Indian,’ and ‘Hispanic.’ Research indicates that a large number of Hispanic people are unsure how to answer the race question when asked separately because they perceive race and ethnicity as similar, often choosing ‘some other race’ or leaving the question unanswered. Additionally, a Middle Eastern and North African category has been added to the race and ethnicity question choices. People from places like Lebanon, Iran, Egypt, and Syria, who were previously encouraged to identify as white, now have the option to identify themselves in the new group. Results from the 2020 census, which asked respondents to write in their backgrounds, suggest that over 3.1 million U.S. residents identify as Middle Eastern and North African (MENA). New research released this month by the Census Bureau shows that over 2.4 million people, or approximately 80%, who wrote their background as MENA did so under the white category in the race question on the 2020 census questionnaire
