A new study reveals that age-related changes in stem cells within fatty tissue can lead to increased belly fat production. The research suggests that these cellular changes, along with factors such as stress and sleep issues, contribute to the challenges of maintaining a healthy weight as we age.

Aging presents unique challenges when it comes to maintaining a healthy weight. While many strive to stay fit and active as they grow older, new research has shed light on the cellular changes that contribute to age-related belly fat accumulation. Findings published in the journal Science reveal that older stem cells in fatty tissue, called adipocyte progenitor cells (APCs), are more adept at creating new fat cells.

These cells, when transplanted from older mice into younger mice, resulted in significantly increased fat cell formation.The study, conducted at City of Hope, found that aging modifies APCs into a specialized group called committed preadipocytes, age-specific (CP-As). These CP-As are particularly active in producing new fat cells, contributing to belly fat expansion, particularly in older individuals. Researchers identified a specific signaling pathway, the leukemia inhibitory factor receptor (LIFR), as a key trigger for this fat cell production. LIFR appears to play a crucial role in activating CP-As and promoting belly fat growth in older mice.Despite these age-related changes, experts emphasize that individuals can take proactive steps to mitigate belly fat. Dr. Sajad Zalzala, chief medical officer at AgelessRx, suggests prioritizing protein intake, optimizing sleep and stress management, and limiting ultra-processed carbohydrates and refined sugars. He explains that adequate protein consumption helps maintain lean muscle mass, which slows down metabolism and reduces fat storage. Prioritizing quality sleep and managing stress levels are also crucial as chronic stress and inadequate sleep contribute to increased cortisol levels, promoting fat storage, especially around the waist. Furthermore, minimizing added sugars and highly processed carbohydrates helps regulate insulin sensitivity and reduce fat accumulation, particularly visceral fat found deep within the abdomen
