, Celia Keenan-Bolger has played characters with a mighty depth and humanity.centers on a wildly self-absorbed single mom and her two teenage kids. Directed with equal parts humor and heartbreak by Tina Landau , the family moves from one roach-infested sub-basement apartment to another in the wake the mom’s larger-than-life haze of cigarettes and gin. Their father, who cleared out the checking and savings accounts, is long gone.
Partly autobiographical, the play is based on Vogel’s nomadic life with her family. Nominated for four Tony awards, including Best Play, all three actors received nominations. As Keenan-Bolger explains, siblings inform how we view our families. “They not only help us understand our families of origin, our parents especially, but as I've gotten older my siblings have also really helped me understand myself,” says Keenan Bolger. Her two siblings, Andrew Keenan-Bolger and Maggie Keenan-Bolger, are successful artists in their own right. She and her husband, actor John Ellison Conlee, are parents to a nine-year-old son.
“There are all kinds of things that Phyllis does in this play that I do not understand,” says Keenan-Bolger. “But I think I have much more empathy for Phyllis because I'm a mother and I know how much emotional investment goes into parenting a child.”
