It’s a marvelous setting for a novel, reminiscent of the sleepy fictional villages that are forever being ravaged by murder.
The story begins at the end, with a spot of arson. “Everyone in Shaker Heights was talking about it that summer: how Isabelle, the last of the Richardson children, had finally gone around the bend and burned the house down.”This is precisely the sort of disaster Elena Richardson, a Shaker Heights native, thought she could avoid. Mrs. Richardson has lived her life guided by the town’s spirit, trusting the promise that planning prevents catastrophe.
