In a preview at the Christie’s headquarters in Paris, Charles Cator, deputy chairman of Christie’s International, recalled meeting Monsieur de Givenchy back in the 1980s. The couturier took the young expert in furniture and decorative arts under his wing and, a few years later, Cator helped Givenchy organize a sale in 1993, at one point pulling an all-nighter at the printers to proofread the catalogue.
“Hubert was a great supporter of French culture, an ambassador of French taste, while also being very open to other things and places in the world,” Cator offered. “He liked noble simplicity. He saw how to use very grand, wonderful but sometimes difficult French furniture in a way that was understated and easy to live with, which made him important to the antiques trade as well.
In addition to the Christie’s auction, Hubert de Givenchy’s style has inspired a tribute across town, at the Galerie Kugel, a bijou of an antiques gallery on the Left Bank. There, brothers Alexis and Nicolas Kugel, who worked with Monsieur de Givenchy for more than 30 years and penned the preface for the Christie’s sale catalogue, have reconfigured a salon in the style of the couturier’s green living room, anchored by hallmarks of his taste.
