Each year, we have the challenging yet rewarding task of selecting our Big and Little of the Year , recognizing matches that have made an extraordinary impact on each other’s lives. This year, one match truly stands out: DJ and his Little Brother, Anthony. Anthony’s journey has not been an easy one. Following the tragic loss of his biological father in 2016 and his mother in 2019, he faced unimaginable grief and trauma. By the time he was matched with DJ in 2021, Anthony was struggling with his past, leading to outbursts, anger, and difficulties in school. Enter DJ, a steadfast source of support and stability in Anthony’s life. As the Director of Communications with Volunteers of America, DJ brings a wealth of experience and compassion to their match. Over the past three years, DJ has not only championed Anthony’s story but has also forged a valuable partnership between BBBSAK and VOA, enhancing the resources available to the youth we serve. Through shared activities like gaming, movie nights, and long bike rides, DJ and Anthony have built a strong bond, creating safe spaces for vulnerable conversations. Both are artistic and creative, exploring their interests in writing and photography together. This connection has had a profound impact on Anthony, who has transformed into a thriving high school student excelling academically and participating in the ROTC. Friends and family describe him as polite, humorous, and disciplined—qualities that highlight his resilience in the face of adversity. The story of Anthony and DJ is just one example of how BBBSAK has been making a difference in the lives of youth across Alaska since its founding in 1972. Our mission is rooted in the belief that every child deserves a mentor, someone who can provide guidance, support, and encouragement. With programs expanding across Anchorage, MatSu, Fairbanks, Juneau, Haines, and Sitka, BBBSAK is committed to creating lasting, positive impacts on the lives of the youth we serve. But we can’t do it alone. The need for mentors continues to grow, and we invite you to join us in making a difference.
