Celebrate today knowing the American Revolution is ongoing | Opinion
do not know what country we declared our independence from. Even worse, 6% did not know we fought a war for our freedom. But I bet they know about fireworks and parades on the Fourth of July.
It was a good thing it was a young man’s fight because it was a long war — America’s longest until Afghanistan. The combined U.S. involvement in World Wars I and II comprised 1,949 days. The American Revolution, from Lexington and Concord to Yorktown, lasted 2,374 days. No wonder Thomas Paine remarked, “The harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph.”Any notion that the British fashioned a muted or confused Vietnam-like effort is mistaken.
The British offered peace and amnesty, generous terms that would have typically been accepted by 18th-century standards. But Americans simply refused to accept defeat. A tattered army of threadbare young boys and old men, citizen soldiers, absorbed losses and shared privations, preserving the Continental Army and the revolution.
In the Declaration of Independence, Jefferson elegantly noted they would not live under “a long train of abuses and usurpations.”Franklin framed the reason for independence more simply and in a strikingly modern fashion. “War is when the government tells you who the bad guy is,” he claimed. “Revolution is when you decide for yourself.”
Hopefully, you will consider the fireworks and parades a remembrance of the revolution this year. Independence Day is a celebration of the founding and ongoing, and imperfect, American experiment. One of the young American heroes of the war, Benjamin Rush, who was 30 years old in 1776, noted, “The American war is over, but this is far from being the case with the American Revolution.”
