A Cedar Hill grandmother got the opportunity of a lifetime when she went on NBC’s new reality TV show Hot Wheels: Ultimate Challenge.
. The show gives contestants the chance to be reunited with a car from their past that they get to modify into “the life-sized Hot Wheels of their dreams.”
For Spencir, that car was a yellow 1977 Volkswagen Beetle, which conjured memories of her relationship with her grandfather. After growing up in an abusive household, she became close to her grandfather, she says. He took her to see the Volkswagen and she bought it with her own money. He then taught her how to drive its 4-gear manual stick shift.
“That car, for me, was an escape from where I was brought up,” Spencir says. “It was independence. You know, my independence. It was my first taste of having fun really, because before that I didn’t have any way to get around. It’s a car that just meant the world to me. It offered up a new world that I had never had before. And my grandfather was there teaching me and mentoring me along the way.
“I was going for a post-apocalyptic look because it represented the battles that I went through as a child, yet it was strong and it endured. It fought the good fight and it won,” she explained, fighting through some emotion. “Now, it’s a beast and I wanted it to look rugged and tough and weathered for that reason.”
Spencir’s design won over the episode’s judges and she claimed a $25,000 prize. She is now in the running to make the show’s finale, where three competitors will vie for a $50,000 grand prize. The winner’s design will be made into a Hot Wheels model that will be sold to the public.Since going on the show, Spencir has seen a variety of reactions. Her kids, she says, only offered an “OK, that’s cool.” But her friends were “super excited.” Some have even wanted to spend more time with her..
