The total number of COVID-19 cases in Cebu has breached the 1,000 mark on Sunday after at least 60 inmates of the Mandaue City Jail have contracted coronavirus disease. | daleCDN
According to the Mandaue City Public Information Office, all the 60 new cases recorded on Sunday were from its city jail.
“Massive testing in the Mandaue City Jail revealed the increasing number of inmates who have contracted the COVID-19,” the city government said in a statement. The first infection at the Mandaue City Jail was recorded last April 24 when an inmate was hospitalized and tested positive for COVID-19 at the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center in Cebu City.
Last May 2, the Department of Health in Central Visayas reported that one inmate at the Mandaue City Jail died of COVID-19. The Cebu City Jail has also recorded at least 333 infections while the Cebu Provincial Jail also recorded 18 inmates who are infected with the coronavirus.
