After virtually disappearing for several years, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is now urging doctors to be vigilant for a renewed wave of enterovirus D68, a viral infection in children that can cause a rare kind of paralysis.

Both viruses tend to spread in waves that fill children's hospital beds every other year. That was expected to happen in 2020, until the COVID-19 pandemic overtook them and disrupted the pattern.

"You have four years of children who now haven't seen those viruses and wouldn't be expected to have immunity to them," Messacar said. also voiced concern over the reemergence of enterovirus D68 infections after COVID-19 lockdown measures were eased across the continent. "However, as seen in previous EV-D68 peak years, where several EV-D68 associated AFM cases have been reported as well, we have not seen a major upsurge of these AFM cases in 2021," Benschop wrote in an email.

Enteroviruses are part of the same family of infectious pathogens as poliovirus and parechovirus, as well as rhinovirus – a close relative that also ranks as one of the most frequent causes of the common cold.

But the failure rates of big data projects and AI projects remain disturbingly high. And despite the hype, companies have yet to cite the contributions of data science to their bottom lines. Why is this the case? In many companies, data scientists are not engaging in enough of softer, but more difficult, work, including gaining a deep understanding of business problems; building the trust of decision makers; explaining results in simple, powerful ways; and working patiently to address concerns among those impacted. Managers must do four things to get more from their data science programs? First, clarify your business objectives and measure progress toward them. Second, hire data scientists best suited to the problems you face and immerse them in the day-in, day-out work of your organization. Third, demand that data scientists take end-to-end accountability for their work. Finally, insist that data scientists teach others, both inside their departments and across the company.
