The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has instructed all 50 states to prepare for the distribution of a coronavirus vaccine as soon as November, which, while a positive sign of the vaccine’s progress, is alarming to health officials concerned President Trump is rushing the process to get an antidote out by election day.
Redfield warned state governors and health departments that McKesson Corporation and subsidiaries, which has a partnership with the U.S. government to distribute the vaccine, would soon apply for permits to build the sites. “The normal time required to obtain these permits presents a significant barrier to the success of this urgent public health program,” Redfield wrote, asking states to be ready for distribution sites to be “fully operational” by November 1.
The timing of the letter has raised eyebrows over the potential politicization of the virus’s distribution, which Trump has voiced intention to get out before election day on November 3. On the same day Redfield sent this warning to states, Trump announced to Americans during his speech at the Republican National Convention that his administration would have a vaccine ready by the end of the year. Remarks from Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Stephen Hahn last week that he’d be willing to consider fast tracking the vaccine before phase three trials end sparked widespread concern among medical experts.
