BIZARRE NEW OUTBREAK: Health officials are still unclear how the kids became infected but are investigating a possible link between the adenovirus and the hepatitis infections.
"This Health Advisory serves to notify US clinicians who may encounter pediatric patients with hepatitis of unknown etiology to consider adenovirus testing and to elicit reporting of such cases to state public health authorities and to CDC," the health agency said.
Of the additional four patients who were diagnosed with both illnesses, two required liver transplants. Laboratory testing has ruled out the hepatitis type A, B, C and E viruses that usually cause such illnesses. Officials said they are not aware of international travel or other factors that might have put the kids at risk. The CDC also noted that a possible link between the adenovirus infections and hepatitis is currently under investigation.
