Earlier this month, the Trump administration directed hospitals to send pandemic-related data directly to the state or the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, eliminating contact between the CDC and hospitals. Redfield said he was told once the “important decision” had been made but did not speak directly with HHS Secretary Alex Azar or Vice President Mike Pence about the shifting process.
The White House’s Coronavirus Task Force and the HHS said they ordered the changes because some hospitals were failing to report information daily.any data collection issues were more likely caused by the federal government’s shifting instructions, and that the new data reporting guidelines could increase the burden on already strained facilities.
When announcing this decision, the Trump administration also floated the idea of using the National Guard at hospitals to help with data collection, which was vehemently opposed by the industry. Redfield is one of three top health officials testifying before the Democratic-led panel on Friday. Dr.
