The CDC director urges teens to get vaccinated amid increasing Covid-19 hospitalization rates

showing increasing hospitalization rates among 12-17 year olds this spring, encouraging them to get the Covid-19 vaccine and continue to practice social distancing measures until they are fully vaccinated.... [+]The CDC study published Friday shows that Covid-19 hospitalizations among 12-17 year olds declined to 0.6 hospitalized per 100,000 people in mid-March—from a peak of 2.1 per 100,000 in early January—but then increased again to 1.3 per 100,000 in April.

Nearly one-third of those hospitalized required intensive care and 5% needed mechanical ventilation, but none of the hospitalized teenagers died. The spread of more transmissible coronavirus variants, larger numbers of teenagers returning to school and other indoor activities, and changes in behaviors like mask-wearing and physical distancing may have contributed to the increase in hospitalizations, the CDC researchers suggested.

Of the hospitalized teenagers, approximately 70% had at least one underlying medical condition, but nearly 30% did not, which the researchers said “indicat[es] that healthy adolescents are also at risk for severe COVID-19–associated disease.” The cumulative hospitalization rate among 12-17 year olds was still 12.5 times lower than the rate among adults 18 years and older, and was on par with children ages zero to four, but higher than five to 11 year olds.
