The community task force presented its initial recommendations for possible closures and consolidations last month, creating nine different plans for the district's buildings that focus on enrollment, building usage capacity, and usage."That only leads to more disparities and dis-investments," Izetta Thomas, lead organizer for the Columbus Education Justice Coalition said.
In 2024, however, enrollment is 46,000, less than half of the district's peak, but all of those buildings are still around and roughly a dozen are vacant. One speaker offered up a solution which she said would benefit the district as well as the community. "Sell those buildings and create affordable housing we so desperately need in Columbus," Lois McCampbell said. "They're in the areas where we need housing. so, please don't destroy communities. Don't destroy our city. Let's build up our school system. Let's make it great."was not present for public comment, but showed up a half hour later.
