James Anthony is a member of the Woodies, a group of skilled CC Young woodworkers who repair furnishings for fellow residents. They also make boxes, charcuterie boards and other items that are sold to benefit residents whose funds have been depleted.Several times a week, Carol Shinoda drives to CC Young Senior Living to study Spanish, flex her artistic skills, and participate in various activities and events.

Drumba — a fast-paced, upper- and lower-body cardio workout that combines drumming with dance steps — is just one of many classes offered at CC Young’s The Point & Pavilion. “Research has shown that adults who participate in lifelong learning programs reap many benefits, including a decrease in cognitive decline and an increase in social well-being,” Reinke says.

In addition to its new partnership with OLLI at UNT, the Spirit is Ageless Art & Writing Contest is back at The Point after a COVID hiatus. In its 22nd iteration, the competition for ages 55-plus offers 15 categories of projects, and every entry is displayed at The Point. The “Woodies” — skilled woodworkers in their 70s, 80s and 90s — repair furnishings for fellow residents and craft boxes, charcuterie boards and other items that are sold to benefit CC Young residents whose funds have been depleted.“It was an opportunity for me to get involved with a group of folks here, even though I didn’t have an extensive background in woodworking like some of the others,” he says. “It’s for a good cause — the benevolence fund — and I was able to develop new skills.

McLeod continued to study and create art wherever she could after she married a railroad man and accompanied him and their five children on numerous moves around the South.
