CBS is set to premiere 'Beyond the Gates', a new daytime drama, marking the first Black soap opera in 35 years. The series will follow the lives of the Dupree family, who are 'the very definition of Black royalty' in their affluent community.
Julia Moore is a TV writer-reporter at PEOPLE. A graduate of Northwestern University, she has been working at PEOPLE since 2022. An all-new CBS daytime drama that premieres on Feb. 24, will make history as the first Black soap opera in 35 years. On Monday, Dec. 16, the network dropped the first teaser for the new series, which takes place in a 'posh gated community' in 'one of the most affluent African American counties' in the country just outside of Washington, D.C, per the official logline.
The teaser sets the scene for the show's protagonists, the 'powerful and prestigious' Duprees, who are 'the very definition of Black royalty' in the luxurious Fairmont Crest community. 'Your family rules this community,' someone says in the teaser, while another character teases, 'This is going to make history. How awesome is that?' The series stars Clifton Davis and Tamara Tunie as the patriarch and matriarch of the family, Vernon and Anita Dupree. Vernon is a 'gentle, humble and generous' former senator, while Anita used to be a famous singer. The couple share daughters Dr. Nicole Dupree Richardson (Daphnee Duplaix) — a 'high-achieving and competitive philanthropist and psychiatrist' whose life seems perfect from the outside — and Dani Dupree (Karla Mosley) — a 'former model turned momager who gave up her career for love' and 'has always marched to the beat of her own drum.' And Sheila Ducksworth, president of CBS Studios' NAACP venture, said in a press release, 'This series will salute an audience that has been traditionally underserved, with the potential to be a groundbreaking moment for broadcast television.
