ile detention centers.A 55-page lawsuit against the Department of Human Services was filed on Wednesday alleging 20 cases of sexual abuse took place at state-run juvenile detention centers .
The U.S. Department of Justice found from 2008 to 2009, an estimated 12 percent of youth in juvenile facilities nationwide experienced sexual assault. In 2018, the Department of Justice released a new report showing PA has a low juvenile sexual victimization rate. The 2018 report did not include specific data for the percentage of youth at state-run facilities reporting sexual abuse.
Senior Attorney at the Juvenile Law Center, Malik Pickett said there’s a long history of sexual abuse in PA juvenile justice centers.Pickett said there needs to be a confidential way kids can report abuse in these facilities. In a statement to CBS 21 News, DHS said children in juvenile detention facilities can report abuse to ChildLine, or to mandated reporters, such as probation officers, attorneys, or family members.
