“No one should go into Dauphin County Prison concerned that they might leave in a body bag," Commissioner Justin Douglas said.
After three deaths at Dauphin County Prison since December, the CBS 21 News sat down with Dauphin County Commissioner Douglas to seek answers about what has been done to begin improving conditions at the prison. “We don’t have any autopsy results. We don’t even know if they have medical care while they are at the facility because the facility has been tied lipped about that,” Hargreaves said. However, he said they are looking at policy and procedures currently in place at the prison.
Douglas also said staffing and retention is a major challenge at the prison. He said they are currently short 56 correction officers, some of which are working 16 hour shifts to make up for the staffing shortage.A report shows from 2017 to 2021, 20 people died at the prison or at local hospital right after being incarcerated.
