The bullying Knicks need their comeuppance, and Cleveland wants to give it to them. But with Darius Garland and Jarrett Allen on the bench, we're not going to know if the Cavs are ready to deliver.
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cleveland’s bullies have returned, and the home team says it feels motivated to fight them again. But it doesn’t have enough muscle. And unlike the last time Cleveland lost to the Knicks, that is no commentary on the weight room.
Garland will eventually be asked to erase the bad memories from last year’s Knicks series, during which Cleveland was outscored by 18 points with him on the floor. Allen will earn his chance at retribution after New York’s big men embarrassed him on the offensive glass last spring. And Donovan Mitchell, who scored 26 points in another loss to the Knicks Tuesday, will be eager to remind New York why it should’ve traded for him.
But as Cleveland learned last year, playoff atmospheres are hard to mimic during the 82-game season. That’s especially true when your all-star point guard and defensive anchor are watching from the bench. Sam Merrill and Emoni Bates may have bright futures, but they can’t account for Garland’s creative passing. And Thompson may be a strong locker room presence, but he can’t protect the rim like Allen.
