Kenny Atkinson becomes the first coach ever to start 9-0 in a debut campaign.

The Cavs stayed undefeated with a 131-122 win over the wounded New Orleans Pelicans Wednesday night. Cleveland is 9-0 this season, the best start in franchise history, erasing a previous mark that had been in place for nearly 50 years.

But the Pelicans — without Dejounte Murray, CJ McCollum and Trey Murphy III — kept fighting back. They pulled within six points halfway through the fourth. They did it again with about three minutes left. Cleveland — and its star guard Mitchell — wouldn’t allow New Orleans to get any closer than that.

Wednesday night was choppy at times. Garland, who started feeling ill during pregame warmups, bolted to the locker room to throw up shortly after the second half started. Both Allen and Mobley dealt with foul trouble that took away an ability to aggressively protect the paint. But the how and why didn’t matter as much this time. It was bigger than that.
