The Cavs are set to kick off the NBA's in-season tournament on Friday. Learn about the tournament, its format, motivations, and what's at stake for the Cavs and the other 29 teams around the league.
The tournament, announced on Aug. 15, is a competition designed to add excitement to the league’s schedule and provide additional incentives for teams to compete during the regular season. The tournament features all 30 NBA teams divided into six five-team groups, separated by conference.Sacramento Kings, Golden State Warriors, Minnesota Timberwolves, Oklahoma City Thunder, San Antonio Spurs
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver gained inspiration for the tournament format from European soccer cup competitions. Each team will play four group stage games in November, with the group winners advancing to the knockout rounds. The quarterfinals will be held on Dec. 4-5, and the semifinals and championship game will take place Dec. 7 and 9 in Las Vegas. One of the primary motivations behind it is to generate revenue, particularly through television rights.
Instead of playing 82 regular-season games, each team will play 80 games, with the final two games determined by their performance in the tournament. The teams that reach the championship game will end up playing 83 games in total. The championship will not count as a regular-season game. The tournament is set up so that teams will have to adjust to new games added to their schedules based on their performance throughout the tournament.
