Welcome to the biggest non-LeBron offseason of the 21st century for the Cavs.
CLEVELAND, Ohio — The sky is clear in Cleveland tonight, but clouds are drifting toward Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse. The Cavs are coming home for good following Wednesday’s 113-98 loss to the Celtics, which clinched the series in five games, and they’re bringing a storm of change with them.
To be fair, the Cavs showed tangible progress by winning a playoff series this season. They showed Mitchell how much potential they possess during Cleveland’s Game 2 drubbing of Boston at TD Garden. And this core didn’t get the chance to play Boston at full strength all series with Jarrett Allen missing five games, Mitchell missing two and Caris LeVert missing one.
I have a hunch we’ll find out. No change will occur without Mitchell’s approval, but all of them are within Altman’s reach at the moment. Resilience can’t heal a lost season, but I think the context in these moments matters to fans. Cleveland can’t do anything about injuries or a talent deficit. But as the Cavs showed Wednesday, they can use mettle to close the gap. And they can send fans into the offseason feeling good about how their team finished its season.Morris still thinks its 2011, still thinks he’s living in Lawrence, Kansas, and still thinks he’s an All-American that can score on any defender in his path.
Finding your rhythm without opportunities is a skill that Morris has clearly developed. And no joke: That’s an invaluable weapon to deploy in a playoff series if someone gets hurt or plays poorly . I’m not sure what Morris is planning next season, but the Cavs should convince him to plan it in Cleveland. You can’t blame Bickerstaff for the injuries that ruined his rotation this postseason. You can’t blame him for Cleveland’s inconsistent — or consistently bad — 3-point shooting, either.
