The Cavs did exactly what they needed to do in free agency.
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The five players the Cavs will soon officially sign in free agency -- Caris LeVert, Max Strus, Georges Niang, Ty Jerome and Damian Jones -- have combined for zero All-Star appearances. None of them are headliners. Compared to last year’s summer splash -- acquiring star guard Donovan Mitchell from the Utah Jazz for a bounty of young players and draft picks -- this was barely a ripple.
The Garland-Mitchell-Mobley-Allen quartet works. It was one of the league’s most effective, outscoring opponents by 8.8 points per 100 possessions.Okoro. LeVert. Lamar Stevens. Dean Wade. They all got a chance. The numbers pointed to LeVert being the best -- even though he isn’t the ideal stylistic fit.be. Just as he was for the Heat at various points, bringing shooting, spacing, gravitational pull and off-ball movement to counteract terrifying defensive limitations .
Given everything, Strus was the best wing option -- and the front office had his name atop its wish list, with his shooting stroke, toughness and playoff experience all playing part in that ranking. Volume is critical. Having that kind of player will open the floor for Garland and Mitchell. It will take some of the attention away from the starry duo. It will force opponents into a pick-your-poison predicament.
According to sources, he was the second name on the team’s free agency target list -- behind Strus -- and one of the first calls made on Friday night. Jerome -- a 6-foot-5 point guard who grew up in the New York area playing youth sports with Mitchell -- has been a favorite of president of basketball operations Koby Altman’s for years.
