China's CATL, the world's largest electric vehicle battery manufacturer, announced plans to aggressively expand battery swapping in China starting next year. The battery swapping system allows for rapid recharging similar to refueling a conventional car. Instead of waiting for batteries to recharge, drivers can swap depleted batteries for a new one at a designated station.

CATL, con sede en China, anunció planes para abrir 1.000 estaciones de intercambio el próximo año en China, incluyendo en Hong Kong y Macao, con un objetivo a largo plazo de construir 10.000 estaciones con socios. Si la empresa alcanza esa meta, podría rivalizar con Nio, una marca china de coches eléctricos de 10 años de antigüedad que ha abierto más de 2.700 estaciones y tiene planes para inaugurar al menos 5.000.
Jing Yang, director de Fitch Ratings especializado en los sectores automotriz y de energía renovable de China, dijo que a los fabricantes de automóviles podría preocuparles que adoptar un paquete de baterías estándar podría ceder demasiado control de su cadena de suministro a otros. Pero algunos podrían querer sondear el terreno para ver si el intercambio de baterías puede mejorar las ventas, y hacerlo con CATL o Nio podría reducir el costo, dijo.
El concepto ha demostrado ser más fácil de implementar con vehículos de flota —taxis, autobuses y camiones comerciales— que tienen un modelo estándar y, en algunos casos, siguen rutas establecidas.
