Rather than use a clean-sheet design, the popular construction-equipment company used a Ford Super Duty as a building block.
Caterpillar, the company behind popular yellow-painted construction equipment, is considering dipping its metaphorical toes into the truck market. The heavy-equipment manufacturer revealed its new Cat Truck concept, which is a Ford Super Duty with a body kit, CAT logo, and splashes of yellow paint.
The hulking truck is loaded up with technology that Cat says will help transform job sites using artificial intelligence. Sometimes ideas come from unlikely places. In the case of Caterpillar, the construction-equipment company's inspiration for its newest conceptual product came from a series of AI-generated images posted on the internet in late 2024. Now, Cat has revealed a heavy-duty pickup called the Cat Truck that was inspired by those AI photos. 'You couldn't look away, and we couldn't either,' the company wrote in a press release. While the original photos may not have come directly from Cat, it still fielded thousands of messages from customers and contractors asking what a Cat-branded pickup would look like. Apparently, it looks exactly like a Ford Super Duty with a body kit, a smattering of yellow paint, and various tech-focused add-ons. ' dreamed of torque and towing power,' the company wrote. 'Those were the easy parts for Caterpillar, so we went further to see how we could help them even more.' They were probably easy for Caterpillar because Ford did all the work on the powertrain, and it simply wrote a check for the HD pickup. According to the company, helping customers out even more means a drone-launching station, a driver-fatigue monitoring system, and a camera system to detect if workers are too close to heavy machinery. The truck also features an additional screen on the dashboard that houses the company's AI assistant, along with the rest of the aforementioned monitoring software. It's worth noting that Caterpillar hasn't actually confirmed that it will sell the Super Duty-based pickup. As things currently stand, the truck is just a concept, though it's not out of the question that we start seeing production versions on job sites in the next few years. ➡️ Skip the lot.
