Scientists fear crucial Antarctic research is at risk — in the midst of unprecedented sea ice changes – after the Australian Antarctic Division told staff it would need to find $25 million in savings.
Some savings measures proposed included hiring in-house lawyers after the AAD last year spent $2 million on external legal advice across 50 matters.
"Everyone in the AAD is scratching their head, trying to understand how – when there was a significant investment –they got themselves in a budget shortfall," he said. "To take money away at a time when we need it more than ever — and especially when there is such geopolitical interest in Antarctica, of the territory, from other nations who don't share our interests in protecting the environment and managing it the way we do — we need to be upping our investment," he said.
